English Tutor

Clare Littlemore

Passionate English tutor with 20+ years' experience. I strengthen reading and writing skills & prepare students for GCSE Language & Literature. Extremely experienced with both EDUQAS and AQA exam boards.

About me

Hi! I’m Clare Littlemore and I have been a qualified secondary school English teacher since 2001. During this time, I have worked in three different high schools in a number of roles. I spent ten years as Assistant Head of English at one school and also stepped up to the role of Head of Department on a number of occasions. All of this has made me a skilled, experienced teacher of English with a full understanding of the expectations of the National Curriculum and the rigours of the GCSE English Language and Literature courses.

I have a solid understanding of current exam requirements and keep up to date with changes being made by the government to GCSE specifications. In addition to this, I have an excellent grasp of the standards pupils are expected to meet at KS3, which feed into their GCSE years. Much of my time as Assistant Head of Department was spent developing a broad-ranging, rigorous Key Stage Three programme of study aimed at thoroughly preparing students for their GCSEs.

I have experience of teaching the full age range of pupils from Year 7 through to Year 11 (as well as Year 12 and 13 pupils resitting their GCSE) and develop effective working relationships with my students to get the best out of each individual. I have previously tutored numerous students throughout preparation for their GCSE English examinations. I have a 100% pass rate, and I ensure that every student I tutor fulfils their potential. I have experience of a number of different examination boards, including AQA, WJEC / EDUQAS and the Cambridge IGCSE.

Types of tutoring provided

GCSE English (KS4)

Targeted preparation for both GCSE English Language and English Literature exams for Years 10 & 11.

Key Stage 3 Support

Strengthening core skills for Years 7-9 to build a strong foundation for GCSE success.

Flexible Sessions

Offering 1-2-1, paired, or small group sessions, available both face-to-face and online.

Online GCSE Masterclasses

A cost-effective way to access focused, targeted GCSE revision in a group setting.

Core English Skills

Dedicated sessions focused on improving grammar, reading, writing, and speaking skills.

Tailored Approach

Tutoring sessions are tailor-made to meet the unique requirements and interests of each student.

Online GCSE Masterclasses

A far more reasonably priced alternative to 1-2-1 or group tutoring. Students join via video link for an hour of focused revision. With cameras off and microphones muted, they can learn without distraction, ask questions in the chat, and receive a full set of revision materials afterwards.

Focused Revision

Each session provides an hour of targeted GCSE revision, reviewing texts, exam requirements, and key quotations.

Expert Guidance

I provide model answers, explain common errors, and share tips on how to maximise marks in every response.

Comprehensive Resources

After every session, students receive a follow-up email with the presentation slides and a detailed revision pack to practice their new skills.

One-to-One or Group GCSE Tutoring

For GCSE students, I create a rotational programme where all skills and texts are studied thoroughly and revisited regularly. This programme is flexible and reviewed often to ensure we spend more time on any areas where the student is less confident.

Personalised Programme

I liaise with students and parents to create a planned programme of study covering all necessary skills and texts for their specific exam board (AQA, EDUQAS, etc.).

Building Confidence

We begin by working on exam answers together. As the student becomes more confident, I slowly withdraw support until they can produce effective, independent responses.

Constant Feedback

Students receive detailed, constructive feedback on all their work to ensure they know exactly how to improve week on week.

Key Stage 3 Tutoring (Years 7-9)

When tutoring a Key Stage 3 pupil, I build skills and provide one-to-one feedback not always available in a school environment. The focus is on developing independence and strengthening core English abilities to prepare them for the challenges of GCSEs.

Tailored to the Individual

After an initial discussion with the parent and student, I develop a programme that will both interest and engage the pupil while covering all relevant skills.

Detailed Feedback

I provide detailed feedback on all work, ensuring the student understands their strengths and target areas. All assessed work can be shared with parents.

Engaging Reluctant Students

My goal is to nurture a pupil’s abilities in all areas of English and work to engage even the most reluctant students.

Parent & Guardian Testimonials

A sample of previous student and parent feedback.

Clare tutored both my boys through their GCSE English Lit exams. She actually made them enjoy English which I never thought would happen! She was very patient, kind and encouraging and really helped them to understand what they needed to do to pass their exams. Both passed with flying colours and a lot of that was down to Clare.

Clare tutored my daughter in preparation for her GCSE English Lit exam. Clare is a passionate, experienced teacher and we felt so lucky to have her tutoring Sophie. Sophie gained so much knowledge and confidence through Clare’s tutoring. She loved Clare’s style of teaching and her way of explaining things. I loved that Sophie’s sessions were online (which was so convenient for our family’s schedule) and it was wonderful seeing Sophie’s confidence grow. Plus she went from a predicted grade of 7 to getting an actual grade of 8 on the GCSE, which was a fab result.

Clare tutored my son from year 9 onwards. Not an easy task! She has both patience and expertise. She got my son from a likely fail to a grade 6 in both language and lit.

Highly recommended!

Clare is a fantastic, knowledgeable, passionate and caring tutor. We were so impressed by the difference her intervention made to our eldest child’s GCSE results in English Lang and Lit that we were delighted she was able to support our other 2 children in GCSE preparation. I thoroughly recommend her.

My eldest son was tutored throughout years 9, 10 and 11 by Clare to realise his capability in both English Language and Literature GCSE. She motivated him to read, understand, learn and use quotes effectively to confidently answer questions about texts and poetry but also to enjoy learning the subjects.

He became a great creative writer thanks to her support and guidance which is helping him in his BTEC music course where he is required to write song lyrics. For the creative writing question of the Language exam he scored excellently and it was the highest grade in his school year of any student.

He was thrilled to receive his Grade 8 Language and grade 6 Literature results in the summer. His younger brother is due to start with her next September. Thank you Clare! 😊
